The-Ten-Most-Iconic-Movie-Characters

Nostra from My Filmviews has put together another impressive blogathon. Here are the details:

A list of 10 iconic movie characters has been made. That list will be assigned to another blogger who can then change it by removing one character (describing why they think it should not be on the list) and replace it with another one (also with motivation) and hand over the baton to another blogger. Once assigned, that blogger will have to put his/her post up within a week. If this is not the case the blogger who assigned it has to reassign it to another blogger. After you have posted your update leave the link in the comments here and I will make sure it gets added to the overview post.

I was given the baton by Chris from Movies and Songs 365. Here’s a full list of everyone who has participated so far:

Who I’m removing:

Harry Potter

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is an iconic movie character, no doubt, but he is part of a broader ensemble. When people hear the name Harry Potter, they are more likely to think of the series as a whole rather than just the character. There’s also a good chance that people think of the books before the movies. Harry has had a good run, but it’s time for something new.

Who I’m adding:

HAL 9000

HAL 9000

Even those who haven’t seen Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey, will almost certainly recognize its iconic character, HAL 9000. The sentient AI that controls the systems aboard the Discovery One spacecraft is the main antagonist of the film, and he/it was voted the 13th greatest movie villain of all-time by AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Heroes and Villains list. It’s not often that a villain can be menacing and soothing at the same time, but HAL-9000 manages to be both.

And with that, I pass the baton to Vic’s Movie Den.

Very cool! HAL rules. What a great addition. Yeah, I think Harry Potter has had his day and though he was very popular, not sure he is truly that iconic. Good choice. Can’t wait to participate in this. Thanks!

  2. Chris

Hal 9000 is iconic, good choice! Amazing HAL expresses so much just with his voice. Will be interesting to see if those AI’s happen in our life time, and if they have to deal with the infallible issues. That film is so ahead of its time.
Also, thanks for keeping the Godfather on there for another week :)

Considering how rapidly technology is evolving, we might not be too far removed from an AI system like HAL. Now that’s a scary thought.

Hopefully the Godfather and HAL get long runs in this blogathon!

Nice choice. I would have taken out Harry Potter as well since I think he’s more of a book than a movie character (and I’m one of the few who wasn’t impressed by the movies). Can’t disagree with HAL, an excellent addition.

  4. Jaina

Nice addition. Though… I’ve not yet seen 2001! I would have taken out Harry Potter too. Though, that’s due to me having not seen a single HP film nor read the books!

HAL 9000 is a worthy addition, Eric. Though, I’m not surprised with removing Harry Potter. ;)

This will eventually and probably winnow down to Darth and James Bond as final choices.

  6. Tom

Oooh, I’d really like to participate in this. Trouble is, I have no idea where the latest post is. I wonder how I get on board. . .
