Best of the Month: Not only is The Passion of Joan of Arc the best film I watched last month, it is also my favorite from the entire 50 Movies Project. For recent films, both The Hunt and Nebraska impressed me quite a bit.

Worst of the Month: Brian de Palma’s Passion is an awful, awful film. Aside from a few stylish touches, it plays out as a generic, made-for-TV 90’s sleazefest. Rachel McAdams comes across as a weak ripoff of her Mean Girls persona, and Noomi Rapace is completely out of her element. Just think, this is from the same guy who directed the original Carrie.

And that’s a wrap for 2013! For the year, I watched 221 films, finished 43 video games (including DLC content), read 3 books and completed 20 TV show seasons. It was a fun year, but I highly doubt I will be able to sustain those numbers in 2014.

Stay tuned later this week for the grand finale of this year’s project!

Those are quite the numbers. I can’t believe you hit them even once. :-)

And agreed on The Passion of Joan of Arc. A big huge wow for that one.

I heard Passion sucks. Shame, the original movie – Love Crime – was excellent and De Palma used to be able to make good films.

Nice round-up. I feel bad for Brian de Palma. He’s made some excellent movies in the past but he can’t find his way today. A real shame.

Nice roundup here Eric. I LOVE How to Train Your Dragon, that’s pretty close to a full score for me. Glad you enjoyed The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, 7/10 is pretty darn good! Oy, I will definitely steer clear of Passion but I wasn’t all that interested to begin with.

Wow, a very strong list of classics last month.
Everywhere I look, there’s praise for The Hunt, I agree it’s a great film! (I see it’s moved into the IMDB top 250.)
Sad when directors lose the magic, I think I was wise to avoid Brian de Palma’s Passion, haha :)

    Hi, Eric:

Looks like you had a full and prosperous month of exceptional film viewing!

Say what you will. ‘Barry Lyndon’ may not set any speed records for story telling. But few films come as close in opulent costuming for the ladies and superlative, imaginative and creative cinematography throughout. A great choice for a lazy, stay in bed weekend!

Can’t argue with ‘Grand Illusion’, ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’, and ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’. Also pleased to see ‘Solaris’ make the cut,
